When early European American settlers first found horned lizards on their westward expeditions, more often than not, they were found among colonies of Black-tailed Prairie Dogs. There's a reason for that. Prairie dogs are among the top architects of the horned lizard's prairielands. Hundreds of species of plants and animals have been shown to depend on the existence of wild prairie dog towns, and it's no different for horned lizards. In Texas, prairie dogs used to occur as far east as DFW in the north and San Anotnio in the south. You now have to drive a far piece from either town to see them...much like the horned lizards themselves. If we wish to bring back the Horny Toad, we'd be well-served to bring back the Prairie Dog.
Shown is a Black-tailed Prairie Dog with its favorite wildflower (to munch on), a Scarlet Globemallow.
